Competition Results

Without further ado, let's reveal the winners and see what our judges thought about each entry:

First Place

1. HALU

Arixity: Definitely the most polished and complete animation among the other submissions, along with its storytelling wrapped up nicely within the limited time window of Flipnote. This seems to be the only one to achieve that. It also has a nice rhythm to it, maintaining consistency with both the music and the animation, which is done quite well at speed 6 here along with some nice Flipnote VFX work. Halu certainly delivers here — great work all around.

Hatena360: Overall this entry is a very typical Flipnote stick fight. The perspective shots are well done, clear, and well animated like the rest of the animation, though I hope to see people really breaking the limits of what this format has done many times before. Incredibly fluid animation, but the only reason I can't give this 1st place is because it doesn't stand out against the majority of Flipnote stick fights over the years. Still an incredible job!

Hyun: I think this animation had the best overall general understanding of animation and movement. Just super smooth movements, easing, and a good show of force and speed throughout the fight. I also loved the sprinkle of nice particle effects and use of colors. With the addition of a few nice close-up shots, I think this was overall just really well animated for a fight scene!

Yunero: This is as classic as it gets: good start and end, consistent animation all around. I always liked how, with the little duration Flipnote animators have, they can still use the space and music to have a buildup to when the music ramps up and the fight gets more intense.

Second Place

2. dermo™

Arixity: I liked the bounciness in the animation between the little ball guy, and the choreography was pretty engaging to watch with the smooth high-action animation on display. There is good impact with the movement too — it was pretty enjoyable to rewatch overall.

Hatena360: This one gets 1st place for me because it was the only one that made me want to watch it again! It's just so fun to watch and sets itself apart from the normal Flipnote stick fight with its professionally messy style and comedic format. The use of a circular stick figure was fun to see and the occasional perspective shot felt like the cherry on top. There were some moments that were a bit messy to understand, but it was still really fun to watch overall. This one was bleeding with personality!

Third Place

3. MⒶZOkidox

Arixity: The technical work here is amazing. I always really love how MⒶZOkidox is able to elegantly animate these buttery-smooth 3D sequences on ones, at speed 7, and it's something shown at full display on this animation. It left me wanting to see more right before it loops.

Yunero: I loved the choreography and the smooth transitions from 2D to angled shots. Using the different brushes at your disposal to design the stick figures is a nice touch too (talking about the guy with the unique arms).

Fourth Place

4. Numba 5

Hatena360: My only critique is that I really wish this was longer! It's a really fun subversion of expectation when we see just how ridiculously long that sword is, and watching how this guy uses it makes me really want to see more. The weight on the sword is really satisfying and I love how they just drop the sword to kill a bunch of guys — it's creative stuff like this that I love seeing come out of these events! I'd like to see what they could do with more time. Some of the in-betweens looked rushed and unfinished so it gets 3rd place for me.

Yunero: This was a really enjoyable watch with its funny concept. One small thing I really liked was how consistent you were able to draw the giant sword as it rotated each frame. I always loved that attention to detail when it's done right.

Fifth Place

5. Raydel

Hyun: Okay, you're going to have to hear me out on this. As far as ENTERTAINMENT VALUE GOES, THIS PART RIGHT HERE KNOWS HOW TO DO IT. Not the best animation in the world, yes I know, BUT I think the setup, the story, the dialogue, all leading to the fight — and with a satisfying ending to boot. This says a lot about an animation, and it proves to me that you don't need to be the most skilled to place, because I had a blast watching this and I can recognize the effort put into this. There's a 2nd parter too and I actually wanted to watch the 2nd part — I just can't ignore this one. PERSONALLY it is my favorite entry, but it does lack in actual solid animation skill. If this user improves on that, then no doubt they'd be a higher contender.
