Featured Artist: Sweirde (November 13th, 2019)

Hey Flipnote Fans! It's time for our newest Featured Artist... sweirde!

Sweirde has been with Sudomemo since our very first day. Her art style bears a very organic, nature-focused aesthetic, and is filled with cute and fluffy characters featured across a wide variety of tales and capers.

Please tell us about yourself.

Hello! My name is Sweirde (I mostly go by Kira, though). I'm a 21 year old female from Sweden with a passion for drawing, animating and character creation. I have been doing my thing since 2009 and started using Flipnote in 2011, with no real goal but to have fun. I mostly use songs of the Japanese language, as I find them to be catchy and fun to work with in Flipnotes.

What are your interests or hobbies, and how do you spend your free time?

I mostly like to draw and create my own little furry animals, but I also draw a lot of my Splatoon or Pokemon characters with their own little stories. I like to create drawings and Flipnotes that don't have a set story or meaning, but rather leave the viewers to interpret it themselves. My other hobbies include sculpting, voice acting and a little bit of singing. In my free time I mostly draw doodles or play games with friends.

Please introduce some of your best Flipnotes, and tell us why you like them.

Sunshine is Brief (2019)

I like this one because of the setting and story I managed to convey, it was also a lot of fun to work on it, as with the other works listed here.

Ari (2019)

This is one example of a Flipnote that has an abstract meaning that can be interpreted however you'd like. I like it because the atmosphere of the MV fits the song and even though there isn't much animation, it came out almost exactly how I imagined it in my head.

Lambency (2017)

I am very proud of how this one turned out, even if it's from 2016. The visuals go very well with the song, even if it's just a bunch of small movements. This MV holds a special place in my heart because of the friends I included as well.

64 Characters (2014)

Though this one is very old, I'm still quite happy with it, not only as I managed to fit in so many characters, but because it also brings back memories of when I was able to be more active and motivated to make Flipnotes. I remember having a blast animating this and hope to make something similar in the future with the many more characters I've created over time.

What techniques or skills are you especially good at in your Flipnotes? What are some techniques or skills that you wish to improve?

I'd say I'm good at making things flow smoothly, such as hair or tails moving with flow while a character performs an action or wings flapping, I've also been getting better at walk cycles as they're fun for me to do. One thing I'd like to improve on is perspective and complex animation such as fighting scenes; I also want to improve on adding visually appealing effects on my work, though it's not something I feel like I need most of the time.

Please introduce some of your favorite artists on Sudomemo.

I've been a fan of kittydog♥'s work for about 3 years or so. Her art style is simply adorable and captivating, as are her smooth animations. It really inspires me and makes me think of my own Flipnotes from when I was her age. It's amazing to have watched her improve so much over time.

Wogfan101☆'s Flipnotes have never ceased to amaze me, with their cute eye-catching style along with smooth animation, visually pleasing effects and abstractness of some of their MVs, it's always been a pleasure to see new Flipnotes from them, whether it's a MV, AV or simply a short goofy animation, I enjoy it all.

mamallama's work is incredibly beautiful to look at, their use of colors and effects is astounding to me, what impresses me the most has to be how smooth they can animate with the thinnest pen size yet still manage to keep the line-work clean in every frame. Their character designs are also really interesting to me, and their art style is so captivating no matter what angle it's in.

Is there something you would like to say to the Sudomemo community?

Though I'm not as active in posting as I should be, I go here very often to check out what Flipnotes I can find, and I am never disappointed in the amount of work I see! You are all very talented with a lot of potential, don't let anyone tell you "Flipnote is dead" or "Use a better program", you do whatever makes you happy! Also, don't be afraid to take inspiration from other Flipnotes you see, that's what will help you improve and come up with your own altering ideas, but don't steal or trace! Happy Flipnoting :)
