...I found that whatever brush tool you last used before using the L button eraser affects how the eraser works and what gets erased completely or whatnot. Weird, huh? But I'll keep your tips in mind, thanks!
...and turns out it was a software thing I didn't know about. I did try using the R button, and blowing into the L button, but it didn't work...
